Shaker Clock

"Our artwork for this exhibit will consider the element of time and will feature a functioning timepiece. We will create a clock, using the construction plans for a Shaker clock ("grandfather" style) from the early 1800's. While not following these plans in precise detail (for example wood will not be used for this piece), various metal and plastic found objects will be incorporated into it's design. The clock's framework will be of square tube steel and angle iron. This framework will then support panels on each side which will have various re-purposed metal and plastic objects. These objects are recognizable from their original use, but this sculpture will join these pieces in a way that will hopefully inspire the viewer to consider their places in time, both past and present.

We want to stress the urgent need to rescue our environment and that time is of the essence. With today's emphasis on how much one should accomplish in a day, we would like to create and object that makes people think about their hectic pace of life and how much is wasted each day. Constructing a time-related piece of art with re-purposed and recycled materials can emphazise the need to not waste time and valuable resources.

"We are Ginger and Paul Bauer from Chatham County.  Discarded metal objects have formed the basis of our art work over these past five years.  We appreciate the original beauty of each of our found objects and hope that we can extend that beauty into a unique and new creation.

We are inspired by art of all types.  “I especially love mixed media done in a wonderfully ingenious fashion” says Ginger.  “It is fun to see how other artists use a clever mix of items in ways that most people would not imagine and that helps to inspire us in creating our own work.”

Carbon offsets are purchased from NC Greenpower to compensate for the energy used to fabricate and exhibit each of our pieces of art.  We hope to promote this idea to other artists, thereby helping all art become more “earth friendly”.
