Our proposal is to create a near life-size sculpture of a polar bear mother and her two cubs. The mother bear will be in a seated position with one of her cubs nestled between her front paws and the other club climbing up on her form her side.

We are two local artists who have been active with environmental art in the Triangle Area. In addition to doing our own art, we have worked with children in a variety of settings instructing them in the creative use of simple materials. In our work with kids, we always encourage use of recycled materials showing them the myriad of possibilities for creative reuse of materials. We have worked with a wide variety of recyclables such as cardboard packaging materials, plastic bags, aluminum yogurt lids, junk mail, found notions, etc. By using recyclables in a creative fashion, we attempt to raise consciousness about the impact these materials have on our environment.

With this sculpture, it is our intent to draw attention to the plight of the polar bear and raise consciousness of how reckless use of plastics have endangered their habitat and that of other animals.
